The generic hCG drug is a medication containing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) used to induce ovulation once follicle growth in the ovaries is satisfactory. It is an intramuscular injection and can be referred to as your “trigger shot.” This medication is the generic version of meds like Novarel or Pregnyl which also contain hCG and are used for the same purpose but might not be covered by your insurance or are more expensive than the generic version. It is essential that this shot be taken precisely at the time prescribed by your doctor to ensure that your retrieval procedure can proceed as planned.
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone that is used in assisted reproductive treatments to cause final follicular maturation and ovulation. This will be prescribed once a patient has achieved the desired follicle growth in her ovaries due to the gonadotropin medications like Menopur and Gonal-f. Once ovulation occurs, your treatment can continue with intrauterine insemination or egg retrieval, depending on the protocol you have discussed with your doctor.
Administration
Step 1: Gather your supplies and wash your hands
1 minutes
You will need: Vial of powdered medication, vial of sterile diluent, syringe, 22 gauge 1 and 1/2 needle for mixing, 27 gauge 1 and 1/4 needle for administration, alcohol pads and a sharps disposal.
Step 2: Mix your dose
2 minutes
Clean off the tops of both vials, and, using the syringe with the mixing needle attached, draw air into the syringe that matches the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
Insert the needle into the sterile diluent vial and expel the air. Then flip the vial upside down and draw the prescribed amount of diluent into the syringe. Withdraw the needle when you have finished.
Then, using the same needle, insert the syringe into the hCG powder vial and expel all of the sterile diluent. Swirl to dissolve the powder. Next, flip the vial of dissolved hCG upside down and draw the medication into the syringe. Withdraw the needle.
Step 3: Prep your needle
1 minutes
Remove the mixing needle from the syringe using the cap and dispose of it in the sharps disposal. Attach the administration needle by twisting it onto the top of the syringe.
With the needle pointing up, tap the barrel and gently push the plunger until a small droplet of liquid appears at the end of the needle.
Step 4: Pick your injection site
1 minutes
The best place to administer this injection is in the upper left or right butt cheek. Clean the site with an alcohol pad and let air dry.
Step 5: Administer the injection
1 minutes
Holding the skin taught, hold the syringe at a 90 degree angle and insert it all the way in your skin. Slightly pull back on the plunger. If you get blood in the syringe, pull the needle out and start over with a new needle.
Push down the plunger until all the medication is out of the syringe. When done, withdraw the needle. Be sure to dispose of the needle in the sharps disposal. You did it!
